On Wednesday Pritish Nandy, a journalist, filmmaker, and former Rajya Sabha MP, passed away at the age of 73. Actor Anupam Kher, a close friend of his, posted a memorial on X. Nandy suffered a heart attack at his South Mumbai home. Filmmaker Kushan Nandy, his son, told SCREEN about his demise.
Born in Bhagalpur, Bihar, on January 15, 1951, Pritish Nandy gained recognition in the arts, writing, and filmmaking. He translated Bengali, Urdu, and Punjabi language into English and wrote more than forty English poetry volumes. He also made important contributions to the television and movie industries at the same time.
In the 1990s, Nandy established Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC) and produced a number of classic movies, including Mallika Sherawat’s debut Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Sur, Kaante, Juhi Chawla’s Jhankaar Beats, and Kareena Kapoor’s Chameli. At the same time, his company produced a number of well-known online series, including Modern Love Mumbai and Four More Shots Please.
Anupam Kher, Hansal Mehta, and other prominent figures in the Hindi cinema business posted on social media about their experiences and conversations with the director.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Pritish served in Balasaheb Thackeray’s Shiv Sena party as a Rajya Sabha member from 1998 to 2004.
