Actress Masali Baduza is set to join the cast of Bridgerton in the third season finale as John Stirling’s cousin Michaela Stirling, who gets wed to Francesca Bridgerton.

After John’s death in the book, his cousin Michael eventually develops feelings for Francesca and gets married to her. The way that Baduza is portrayed raises the possibility of a queer narrative-related plot twist.

According to Deadline, Bridgerton’s creator Jess Brownell revealed that she had always envisioned an LGBT story for Francesca’s character. Brownell, a gay woman, noted that she could identify strongly with Francesca’s experience of feeling different from her family and the outside world.

The actress disclosed that she grew up in the South African town of East London, which is near Cape Town. “Shortly after apartheid ended” is how Baduza described her birth year to The Independent in the 1990s.

During her time in school, Baduza claims that attitudes and rules from the apartheid era continued to exist. She claimed that rules dictated what they could and could not do with their hair, and that one of the rules prohibited Black girls from wearing their natural afros because they were thought to be messy and unprofessional.

In 2016, Baduza received his degree from the New York Film Academy, located in Los Angeles. She debuted on the big screen in the 2019 Bollywood-inspired movie Bhai’s Café. After she was cast in Noughts and Crosses, her career took off. The main character in the BBC drama series based on Malorie Blackman’s 2001 book series was portrayed by Baduza in the role of Sephy.

In order to accommodate the theory that Africa colonized Europe, the story is told backwards. Baduza claims that the narrative uses African culture—where white culture predominates—to subvert white dominance.

Additionally, showrunner Jess Brownell disclosed in a Glamour interview that they flew Hannah out for a chemistry read with Bridgerton as soon as they watched her tape.
