David Dhawan recently discussed his son Varun Dhawan’s acting career, which began with Arbaaz Khan’s television series The Invincibles Series. He related how his son was unhappy when Varun and his co-star Sidharth Malhotra from Student of the Year (SOTY) were flown to Goa for a photo shoot by Karan Johar.

David expressed his surprise that Varun chose a career in film, saying that they had never discussed it at home. He stated, “He was studying abroad; he came back. We never talked about films. All of a sudden he approached Karan Johar and assisted him for My Name is Khan. The cinematographer, Ravi K Chandran, noticed him mouthing dialogues and told Karan, you must watch this boy. One day, Karan comes home and tells me he wants to launch him.”

“They did a photo shoot for him and Sidharth in Goa. They looked so young, so youthful. Some days, he used to be very upset…these things happen in a two-hero film. I said, son, you’re damn good, your confidence is something else. Just remember one thing, kandhe pe pair rakh aur kud ja (step on the shoulder and jump). That is your success. Darna nahi hain (Don’t be afraid).”

And the movie he was launching with was SOTY (2012), the college drama that marked Alia Bhatt and Sidharth’s feature film debuts.

On professional front

In the horror-comedy Munjya, Varun last appeared in the role of Bhediya. He will soon be seen in the Hindi version of the Tamil movie Theri, titled Baby John. Additionally, he has Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari scheduled.
