After years of anticipation, fans of the 2019 film Parasite have finally heard from director Bong Joon Ho regarding the status of the highly anticipated HBO adaptation. The well-known director assured fans that the project is still in the works during a recent interview with Deadline at the Mickey 17 premiere.

“The writers are working very hard”, he shared, even adding that “the writing room of that show itself can be another TV show”, he said.

On January 9, 2020, it was initially announced that Parasite would be made into a television series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there were talks between filmmaker Adam McKay and Bong Joon Ho to executive produce an English-language HBO series. Variety confirmed the concept shortly after, stating that a six-hour limited series was in the works.

Bong Joon-Ho says HBO's 'PARASITE' series will be “something of great genius” & confirms it is set in the U.S : r/HBOMAX

Given the enormous popularity of Parasite, the announcement caused a great deal of enthusiasm. The movie, which depicts the class conflicts between the rich Park family and the impoverished but crafty Kim family, went on to become a worldwide sensation. It became the first non-English-language picture to win the top prize at the Oscars after winning four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature.

Many fans began to speculate that the project had been discontinued because no casting announcements, plot specifics, or development timetables were disclosed. But such worries have been allayed by Bong Joon Ho’s most recent remarks. HBO and the creative team are still committed to making this adaptation a reality, as seen by his assurance that the writing process is actively moving forward, which has rekindled interest in the series.
