Exorcist set to hit the theaters on 2026: Explore other cult horror reboots before the film arrives

The Exorcist (1973) has been altered so many times to suit the interests of modern audiences that it is just too easy to loose track of them all as per the chronology. The most recent example of this was the box financial failure of Th Exorcist: Believer, which came out last year. Believer was originally the first of three movies that Blumhouse and Morgan Creek planned to finance. But it’s the film’s dismal reception that has put director Mike Flanagan in charge of the potential trilogy. While we wait, here are some iconic horror reboots that have been updated over time.
The Exorcist
The seventh installment in the beloved series will be Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist. The Exorcist (1973), which is based on the same-titled novel by William Peter Blatty (1971), is one of the most cherished films in the annals of horror cinema. IThe entire plot of the movie revolves around an actress who is trying to figure out what terrible things have happened to her 12-year-old daughter, and a priest who is trying to support them both but is having faith issues.
The legacy includes, films like: Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), The Exorcist III (1990), Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist (2005) and The Exorcist: Believer (2023).
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Wes Craven, a horror proficient, released A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. It became the foundation of a successful nine-film franchise. Every one of these movies revolves around the idea of a disfigured, blade-wielding creature named Freddy Krueger persistently plaguing teenagers in their dreams. Then, staying awake is your only chance to get away from Freddy. Johnny Depp played a key role in the original.
The franchise also introduced films like, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988), A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989), Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994), Freddy vs Jason (2003) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010).
The Amityville Horror
In 1979, the first-ever Amityville Horror movie debuted in theaters. The controversial Ronald DeFeo Jr. case served as the inspiration for the whole Stuart Rosenberg film franchise. DeFeo shot and murdered six members of his family at their Amityville home in November 1974. Despite his attorney’s insanity plea, he received a minimum 25-year to life term in prison.
The other standout films from the segment are 2005 Amityville Horror flick starring Ryan Reynolds and the 2017 Bella Thorne’s Amityville: The Awakening.
Friday the 13th
In 1980, Friday the 13th made its debut in the theaters. S Cunningham was the director and producer of the indie horror movie. Despite having a half-million dollar budget, the movie made multiple times as much money, totaling over $59 million. Cunningham was unaware that the movie would set the stage for a franchise that would eventually include up to twelve films.

Halloween
Michael Myers from Halloween surpassed Jason’s score from the Friday the 13th trilogy. With Jamie Lee Curtis in the lead role, Halloween launched a franchise that has produced a staggering 13 pictures, making it maybe one of the better-maintained ones.Every year on Halloween, Michael Myers, the apparently unstoppable masked killer, attempts to take over the charming suburbs, setting up an ultimate bloodbath.
