Indian director Soham Shah has filed a lawsuit against Squid Game and Netflix, claiming that the streaming service plagiarized his 2009 film. Shah filed the case on Friday in federal court in New York, alleging that the television program is a “blatant rip-off” of his Hindi-language film Luck. In his film, a group of impoverished and desperate people are enticed into competitive games by the prospect of large financial awards, only to find out that losing means certain death.

Shah contends that the characters in the Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, and Shruti Haasan film Luck don’t understand until they are in the competition that losing a challenge results in death and that a contestant’s passing increases the reward pool for the surviving contenders. According to Shah, the storyline of Luck and the 2021 television series Squid Game are very similar. He notes that the Luck movie’s plot was conceived in 2006, and it was released worldwide in 2009.

Regarding the originality of Netflix’s program, the lawsuit also mentions that Hwang Dong Hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, claims to have written the series in the same year as Luck was launched. Soham Shah wants to stop Netflix from violating his copyright and is requesting compensation.

Soham Shah’s assertions and the lawsuit have not yet received a response from Netflix. Not only did the firm publish the release date for Squid Game Season 2, but it also revealed the release date for Season 3 lately, shocking fans. The streamer posted, “The real game begins. Squid Game Season 2 is coming December 26, only on Netflix. Final season coming in 2025.”
