Kannada actor R Vijaykumar, better known by his stage name Sarigama Viji, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 77.
“We thought it was the seasonal change of weather infection when he fell sick. But things escalated in the last seven days and he died at about 9.30 am today due to failure of multiple organs,” his son, Rohit stated.
In 1975, Viji made his acting debut in the Kannada movie Beluvalada Madilalli. In addition to acting in 269 Kannada films, he served as an assistant director on about 80 of them.
His most well-known work is the stage play Samsaradalli Sarigama, in which he both directed and performed. According to his son, his theater troupe, Yashasvi, performed the play over 1,390 times, not just in Bengaluru but also in Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai.
Tomorrow at around noon, Viji’s final ceremonies will be held at Chamarajpet Crematorium. To allow his fans to honor him, his body will be on display at his Mahalakshmipuram home till ten o’clock tonight.
“Tomorrow, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce will be organising a public viewing at Ravindra Kalakshetra from 10.30 am to 11.30 am after that he will be cremated at Chamarajpet crematorium,” said his son.
