Joni Mitchell’s music back on Spotify two years after boycotting platform

Joni Mitchell has quietly returned to Spotify, two years after boycotting the music streamer.

Fans noted on Friday that the singer’s songs showed up on the platform, just days after Neil Young returned to the audio giant. However, the “Help Me” singer has not addressed her return.

In support of Young, Mitchell announced in January 2022 that she would be taking her music catalogue down from the streamer. She wrote on her website at that time, “I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”

In protest of false information about the COVID-19 vaccination being spread on Joe Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, Young first removed his songs from Spotify the same year. The artist released (and then removed) an open letter urging the streamer to address false information on the platform.

Earlier this month, the “Harvest Moon” singer explained that his return to Spotify was not a reversal of his original stance, but rather because other audio streaming giants started playing Rogan’s podcast. Last month, the podcaster signed a new arrangement with Spotify under which his show will be distributed across other podcast platforms.
