The award is given to people and institutions that have had a major influence on Asia. According to a story by The Japan Times, it was made as a memorial to the late President of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay, who was well-known for his honesty.

As the first organization to receive the honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli recently created history. To create the animated fantasy picture The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki stepped out of retirement.
