According to a New York Magazine cover article, Neil Gaiman, the well-known author of “The Sandman” and “Coraline,” is accused of sexual assault by several women.
The article in Vulture, “There Is No Safe Word,” expands on earlier coverage by Tortoise Media, which in July published a six-part podcast called “Master,” featuring complaints filed by five women.
Scarlett Pavlovich, one of the victim, claims she met Gaiman in New Zealand through his ex-wife, Amanda Palmer. Palmer asked Pavlovich, who was 22 at the time, to watch their 5-year-old child.
She alleged, “He put his fingers straight into my ass and tried to put his penis in my ass. And I said, ‘No, no.’ Then he tried to rub his penis between my breasts, and I said ‘no’ as well. Then he asked if he could come on my face, and I said ‘no’ but he did anyway.”
“He said, ‘Call me ‘master,’ and I’ll come,’” Pavlovich stated as quoted by New York Magazine. She claims that these encounters persisted while she worked as a babysitter, including one in which Gaiman allegedly forced her to do non-consensual actions after using butter as a lubricant.
Pavlovich also alleges that Gaiman had sex with her in an Auckland hotel room amidst the presence of his son. “What the fuck are you doing?” she asked in a state of shock.
Gaiman’s representative called off the accusations as “false, and deplorable.” After signing an NDA, Pavlovich received $9,200 in several installments. She filed a police report in January 2023, but the matter was dropped without charges because the police said they could not find any proof.
Caroline, another complainant, was a housekeeper on Gaiman’s Woodstock, New York, property. During one of the alleged sexual sessions, she claims Gaiman put her hand on his genitalia while his son was in bed with them. Eventually, Caroline agreed to pay $300,000 for an NDA. Additionally, Gaiman’s agents refuted any wrongdoing and claimed Caroline started these interactions.
Katherine Kendall claims Gaiman tried to attack her on a tour bus, while another accuser, Kendra Stout, says he raped her in 2007 after she repeatedly refused. According to Kendall, Gaiman then paid her $60,000 for counseling in order to “make up for the damage.”
