Gareth Southgate, England’s coach, called rumours linking him to the manager’s role at Manchester United presently managed by Erik ten Hag “completely disrespectful” and highlighted on Friday that he would not begin talks over another job while in charge of the national team.
According to reports in the British media, Southgate might be in the race to replace ten Hag if the Dutchman loses his position as a result of Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS company taking over the club’s football activities.
Southgate’s contract to coach England expires in December, and he stated that his main goal was to guide his country to victory at the June European Championship in Germany.
Speaking on Friday ahead of England’s friendly against Brazil at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, Southgate reacted to a reporter’s query regarding the links to United that have surfaced this week.
“There are two things,” he said. “I am the England manager. I have got one job basically, to try and deliver a European Championship. Clearly, before that, two important games this week (against Brazil and then Belgium on Tuesday).
He also said, “The second thing is Manchester United have a manager, and I think it is always completely disrespectful when there is any speculation about a manager that is in place. I am president of the League Managers’ Association. I don’t have any time for that sort of thing.” Southgate added that his primary focus was on Euro 2024.
