Watch: Violence erupts during Trabzonspor vs Fenerbahce match in Turkish Super Lig

Following a game on Sunday in the Turkish top flight, which has seen a lot of tension this season, violence broke out between Trabzonspor supporters and Fenerbahce players.

At the end of a match that Fenerbahce won 3-2, a crowd of home fans rushed to the field at Trabzonspor’s stadium.

Photos and videos show Trabzonspor fans invading the field and running toward the Fenerbahce players who were celebrating. Some of the players responded by running in his direction, attempting to hit him.

Other fans then invaded the ground while officials attempted to restore order. Videos showed Nigerian international Bright Osayi-Samuel hitting another fan and Belgian international Michy Batshuayi kicking a fan who had reached the field.

Turkey’s interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced the opening of an investigation into the incident after the violent scenes.

He wrote on X, “After the Trabzonspor-Fenerbahce football match played this evening, an investigation has been initiated immediately to identify the spectators who entered the pitch and to investigate the incidents that took place at the end of the match. Incidents of violence on football pitches are never acceptable.”

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) described the incident as “unacceptable” and stated that “the necessary criminal sanctions will be imposed on those responsible for these incidents”.
